Jim Freeland
EducationI received my B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Bradley University in 1968 and tried to get into Navy Officer's Training but flunked the physical based on a heart flutter I had in college. I discovered my passion for learning (it sure wasn't there in high school) and earned a M.S. in 1969 and a PhD in Industrial & Systems Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1973.
Professional LifeI began my career teaching at Stanford Business School and loved living in Northern California from 1973 to 1979. The University of Virginia enticed me to move to Virginia. I am beginning my 26th year on the faculty of the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration (ranked in the top 10 MBA programs). I am the Sponsors Professor of Business Administration and have served as Associate Dean for Faculty for the past 13 years. I still teach but most of my time is spent in recruiting, hiring, and development of faculty at Darden. I do research in the area of operations management and enjoy working with managers in teaching executive education and consulting.
Family LifeI met my wife, Janis Nothdurft, when I was an undergraduate at Bradley University (in Peoria, Illinois). She was the Dean of Admission's daughter. We married on Friday and received our degrees on Sunday in 1968. Jan taught grade school in Atlanta while I was in graduate school at Georgia Tech. When we moved to the San Francisco Bay area we had two children: Ross (30) who teaches high school math and coaches baseball at Evanston Township High School in Evanston, IL and Kelley (28) who works for Skadden Arps Law Firm on Times Square in New York City. So far neither has married although Kelley is in a serious relationship with a New York City fire fighter.
Hobbies & InterestsOutside of my professional life which takes up a lot of time, I am very active in many aspects of sports. I've been an assistant baseball coach at the local high school for 16 years (coached a guy on the KC Chiefs). I play senior league baseball in over 28, 38, and 48 year old leagues in Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland, and was fortunate to be on a DC team that won a National Seniors Championship in 2000. With the younger guys I pitch although I get to hit and play second base with guys more my age. I have played competitive volleyball for many years and attend as many University of Virginia athletic events as I can. I have been training in Tae Kwon Do for nearly seven years now. Jan's (my wife) family own and run a boy's camp in Northern Wisconsin where she spends a big chunk of the summer.
Retirement PlansNone at the moment. I enjoy working with students although at times the job in the dean's office is very stressful. I cannot imagine doing what I am doing now for many more years.
