JOHANN BERNHARD HENRICH PÖPPELMEIER (1770-1854)THE FIRST GENERATION-PÖPPELMEIERThe Pöppelmeier/Pöppelme˙er story begins with the first identified ancestor, Johann Bernhard HenrichG1 Pöppelmeier. Pöppelmeier was the most common spelling found in the old German church books. This form of the surname will be used in the text of this chapter with any variant spelling listed in the endnotes. The story of the Pöppelmeier family begins in the early 1800s at Bauerschaft (farm community) Ahmsen in Lippe. Lippe began in 1190, as a manor. By 1528, Lippe had developed into a Grafschaft (county) and in 1789 it became a principality. In 1871, Lippe joined the German Empire, and became a state of the German Republic in 1918. Lippe became part of the newly formed state of Nordrhein/Westfalen in 1946. All of Lippe chose the Reformiert (Reformed) church as its state religion, except for the city of Lemgo which remained Lutheran.1 Ahmsen lies just south of Herford, in the modern day state of Nordrhein/Westfalen, Germany. The Pöppelmeiers attended St. Petri Reformiert Church and the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church in Herford. 1181. JOHANN BERNHARD HENRICHG1 PÖPPELMEIER (ca.177 0-1854), was born circa 1770. Very little is known about the first 31 years of Johann Bernhard Henrich Pöppelmeier's life. Johann Bernhard Henrich, better known as Bernhard, was first mentioned in the church records of St. Petri Reformiert Church in 1804 at the time of his marriage. He did not appear in the records of St. Petri Reformiert Church, the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church, or Schötmar Reformiert Church before 1804. This indicates that Bernhard was not a resident of this area prior to 1804. The marriage record stated that Bernhard was born in Feb of 1770,2 but it did not indicate where Bernhard was born, nor did it list the names of his parents. The birth record of his first child stated that Bernhard was a resident of Horentrup in Kreis (parish district) Schötmar,3 in Lippe. There is a village called Herrentrup located near Blomberg,4 Germany. Whether this is the place of his birth is yet to be determined. On 4 Nov 1804, Johann Bernhard Henrich Pöppelmeier, age 31, wed JOHANNA WILHELMINE AMALIE KESPOHL, age 23. They were married at St. Petri Evangelisch Reformiert Church located in Herford, Westfalen, Germany. Both the bride and groom were single at the time of their marriage.5 Bernhard was a Zimmermeister (master carpenter) when he married Johanna Kespohl. Johanna (1781-1841), the third child of Christoph and Anna Margarethe Elisabeth Kespohl nee Pellen/Pehle, was born on 30 Mar 1781 at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe. Her parents were of the Evangelisch Reformiert Confession. She was baptized on 1 Apr 1781 at St. Petri Evangelisch Reformiert Church in Herford.6 Johanna was also known as Hanne. She will be referred to as Hanne in the text of this story. For most of their married life, Bernhard and his wife, Hanne, lived at Bauerschaft Ahmsen in Lippe. Bernhard had several different occupations during his lifetime. He was a Zimmermeister (master carpenter), a Schmied (blacksmith), a Pümpenmacher (pump maker), and a Tischermeister (master joiner). He was also an Erbpächter and Heürling. Hanne gave birth to six children before her death. Hanne Pöppelmeier nee Kespohl, age 37, died on 5 Jun 1841 at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe and was buried on 9 Jun 1841 in the Münstergemeinde Kirchhof at Herford, Westfalen, Germany. She was survived by her husband, Bernhard, and five children.7 Bernhard Pöppelmeier, age 84, died from Alterschwäche (debility of old age) on 8 Apr 1854 at Bauerschaft Ahmsen #21, Lippe was buried on 12 Apr 1854 in the Münstergemeinde Kirchhof at Herford.8 He was a Heürling at the time of his death. Bernhard was survived by five children. The six children of Bernhard and Hanne Pöppelmeier nee Kespohl:

JOHANN BARTHOLDG2 PÖPPELMEIER (1821- ), the sixth and last child of Bernhard and Hanne Pöppelmeier nee Kespohl, was born on 10 Apr 1821 at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe, Germany and was baptized on 15 Apr 1821 at St. Petri Evangelisch Reformiert Church in Herford, Westfalen, Germany. He was named after his sponsor, Johann Barthold Kespohl, the Grobschmied (farrier) from Neustädt #300.34 Johann Barthold was known as J. B. or Barthold.35 He will be listed as Barthold in the text of this story. Barthold grew up in the Ahmsen locale and became as Hufschmied (blacksmith). In Dec of 1845, Barthold fathered a child by Anne Ilsabein Breer. Ten months later, Barthold and Anne married. On 11 Oct 1846, Johann Barthold Pöppelmeier, age 25, wed ANNE ILSABEIN BREER, age 25.36 Barthold Pöppelmeier and Anne Ilsabein Breer, were married on the same day as Barthold's older brother, Hermann Heinrich Pöppelmeier, and Anne Catharine Ilsabein Glied. The two couples were married by Pastor Bosse at the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church in Herford. Anne (1821-1915), the daughter of the Heürling, Jobst Henrich and Anne Catharine Ilsabein Breer nee Hufendiek, was born on 14 Feb 1821 at Bauerschaft Diebrock #3, Westfalen, Germany. She was baptized on 18 Feb 1821 at the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church in Herford.37 After their marriage, Barthold and Anne lived at Bauerschaft Laer, where Barthold was a Heürling. They lived at Bauerschaft Laer until they decided to emigrate to America. Barthold is the first documented ancestor to leave his homeland in Germany and cross the Atlantic Ocean to America. It's possible that Barthold had heard what Gottfried Duden had written in his 1829 travel journal about Missouri. Gottfried Duden wrote about the advantages of the soil and climate in Missouri. Because Gottfried Duden wrote so favorably about Missouri, thousands of Germans from Germany and from the Eastern part of the U.S., settled in Missouri. Not only did St. Louis become a center for German settlement, but also along the Missouri River Valley, which became known as the "Missouri Rhineland."38 The settlers who came from the Westfalen area of Germany found that the area of Franklin Co., MO, reminded them of their homeland. Barthold probably started the chain migration of the Glied/Pöppelmeier families to America. He came with his family to America in 1853,39 about thirteen to fourteen years before the family of Johann Hermann Glied and the family of Hermann Heinrich Pöppelmeier. After his arrival in Missouri, Barthold's surname was spelled Poeppelmeier or Poeppelmeyer. On 31 Aug 1854, Barthold appeared at the criminal court in St. Louis, MO to file his intention to become a citizen of the United States. He was 32 years old at the time.40 After a short stay in St. Louis, Barthold and his family moved to Franklin Co., MO, settling in Lyon Township. He became an active member of the newly formed Ebenezer Evangelical and Reformed Church, appearing in the minutes of the church meetings and on the Communicant lists.41 On 15 Mar 1856, Barthold bought a parcel of land from Henry Childers, guardian of the minor heirs of Elijah Adams, deceased. This parcel of land was described as the West half of lot (#2) of Northwest quarter of Section (6), Township (43), Range (3), West containing thirty six acres, also the Southeast quarter of Southeast quarter of Section (36), Township (44), Range (4), West containing forty acres.42 With the arrival of the Civil War in Missouri, Barthold served in the Enrolled 54th Missouri Militia (I 54 E.M.M) as a Union soldier.43 On 25 Dec 1869, Barthold and Anne Poeppelmeier sold 20 acres of land to Herman Becker which was described as the West half of lot (#2) of Northwest quarter of Section (6), Township (43), Range (3), West, convening on the lines of land between Barthold Poeppelmeier and Herman Becker borders on the South by William Kanthemer and on the North by Henry Knehans.44 By 1870, Barthold's personal estate was valued at $1,315 and the value of his real estate was $3,000. He was still a blacksmith. His household consisted of his wife, Anne; his son August, age 21, who was also a blacksmith; his son, Henry, age 14; his daughter, Emilie, age 11; and his son, Gus age 2; William Poeppelmeier, age 22, a wagon maker; and Henry Klingelbel, age 27, a shoemaker from Hannover.45 Over the years, Barthold and his wife, Anne, made several land deals in Franklin Co., MO, too numerous to list here.46 A list of business establishment in 1878, listed Barthold as a blacksmith with the value of his business as $500.47 Barthold was still working as a blacksmith at the age of 59 years in Jun of 1880 when the U.S. Census was taken. His household consisted of only his wife, Anne, age 59, and their son, Gustav, age 12.48 Anne Ilsabein Poeppelmeier nee Breer died on 11 Jan 1915 in Franklin Co., MO at age of 94 years, 10 months, and 27 days. She was buried on 13 Jan 1915 at Detmold with the funeral service being held at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church in Franklin Co., MO.49 The nine children of Barthold and Anne Ilsabein Poeppelmeier nee Breer: 1194. His only sponsor was S. U. Pöppelmeier of Bauerschaft Laer.52 He was five years old when the family left Germany for America. In America, his surname was spelled Poeppelmeier or Poeppelmeyer. He received his religious instruction at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church in Franklin Co., MO and was confirmed by Pastor Welsch on 4 May 1862 at that same church. His Bible verse was Matthew 3:10.53 When the 1870 U.S. Census was enumerated for Lyon Township, Franklin Co., MO, August, age 21, was still living with his parents. As a young man, he worked as a blacksmith.54 On 3 Nov 1873, a few months before he got married, August purchased a parcel of land from his father which was described as the West half of the Northwest quarter of the Northwest quarter in Section (6), Township (43), Range (3), West containing 16 acres and also the South half of the Southeast quarter of the Northeast quarter, the South half of the Southwest quarter of the Northeast quarter, Section (1), Township (43), Range (4), containing 40 acres.55 Also living in the German settlement of Franklin Co., MO, was the family of Johann Henrich Breder, originally from the Herford area of Westfalen, Germany. The Breders and the Poeppelmeiers attended the same church in Herford and in Franklin Co., MO. It is of interest to note that two of Johann Henrich Breder's children married two Poeppelmeiers, who were cousins. Johanna Wilhelmine Breder married August Ulrich Poeppelmeier in Feb of 1874, and Friedrich Wilhelm Breder married Wilhelmine Justine Poeppelmeier, in Mar of 1874. August Poeppelmeier is the first cousin of Wilhelmine Poeppelmeier. Their common ancestor is Johann Bernhard Henrich Poeppelmeier. On 12 Feb 1874, August Ulrich Poeppelmeier, age 25, wed JOHANNA WILHELMINE BREDER, age 18. They were married by William F. Bek, minister of the Gospel at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church in Boeuf Creek, Franklin Co., MO. B. Poeppelmeier and H. Breder witnessed their marriage.56 Johanna Wilhelmine (1855-1942), the fourth child of Henrich and Anne Ilsabein Breder nee Vogeding, was born on 24 Nov 1855 at Lyon Township, Franklin Co. MO.57 She was confirmed in 1870, on Palm Sunday, at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church in Franklin Co., MO.58 Johanna was also known as Hanna and will be listed as Hanna in the text of this story. By the spring of 1880, August, his wife, Hanna, and their two year old daughter, Emma, lived on a farm in Lyon Township, Franklin Co., MO.59 In 1885, August entered into a couple of land deals. In one of the land deeds, August purchased a parcel of land from his parents on 19 Sep 1885. This parcel of land was described as the West part of the Northwest quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section (4) containing (10) acres and West part of Southwest quarter of Southwest quarter of Section (4) containing (30) acres and the East half of the Southeast quarter of Section (5) containing (26) acres, all in Township (43), Range (3) West.60 August continued to live in Lyon Township, and was a farmer the rest of his life. The enumerator of the Twelfth U.S. Census visited the August Poeppelmeier's farm in Jun of 1900 and found August, age 52; his wife, Hanna, age 45; and their daughters: Lydia, age 18; Martha, age 14; and Hilda, age 9.61 Between 1900 and 1910, August and Hanna's daughters, Lydia and Hilda, married and left home. Their daughter, Martha, age 24, was the only child still living at home when the enumerator of the Thirteenth U.S. Census visited the family farm, in Apr of 1910.62 Four months later, their daughter, Martha, died.
