FRIEDRICH WILHELM PÖPPELMEIER (1847-1936)THE THIRD GENERATION-PÖPPELMEIERANDTHE SIXTH GENERATION-GLIEDPART ONEThis chapter opens in 1847 with the birth of Friedrich WilhelmG3 Pöppelmeier. Friedrich Wilhelm was the grandson of BernhardG1 Pöppelmeier, and the son of Hermann HeinrichG2 Pöppelmeier and his wife, Anne Catharine IlsabeinG5 Pöppelmeier nee Glied. He was also the great, great, great grandson of EberdtG1 Glied; the great, great grandson of JobstG2 Glied; the great grandson of Albert HenrichG3 Glied; and the grandson of Albert HenrichG4 Glied. The setting for this chapter begins at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe, which is now located in the modern day state of Nordrhein/Westfalen, Germany and continues in this location until 1867. After 1867, the setting for the story is Lyon Township located in Franklin County, Missouri. The Pöppelmeier surname was found spelled Pöppelmeier and Pöppelme˙er in the German records and Poeppelmeier, Poeppelmeyer and Bebbelmeier in the various civil and church records in Missouri. Friedrich Wilhelm was better known as Wilhelm in Germany and William in America. He will be listed as William Poeppelmeier in the text of this story. 1847 was the year that the Communist Manifesto was written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. In this manifesto, Marx and Engels, called the workers of the world to unite and revolt against their chains.1 In the fall of 1847, Felix Mendelssohn, composer of the music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream, died at the age of 38 years in Germany,2 while on the other side of the world, gold was discovered in California.3 In 1847, the newlyweds, Hermann Heinrich and Anne Catharine Ilsabein Pöppelmeier nee Glied, were living at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe located just south of Herford, Westfalen, Germany. 1847 was the second year in a row that this area had a poor harvest. Because of the poor harvest, Hermann saw the price of grain soar and the sale of linen fall.4 In Aug of 1847, Anne Catharine gave birth to her first child, a son, whom they named Friedrich Wilhelm. 1251. FRIEDRICH WILHELMG3 PÖPPELMEIER (BernhardG1 ) (GliedG6 : Eberdt,G1 Jobst,G2 Albert Henrich,G3 Albert HenrichG4 ), the first child of the Erbpächter, Hermann HeinrichG2 and Anne Catharine IlsabeinG5 Pöppelmeier nee Glied was born on 20 Aug 1847 at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe, Germany. He was baptized by Pastor Bosse on 21 Aug 1847 at the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church in Herford, Westfalen, Germany. His sponsors were Friedrich Wilhelm Glied of Bauerschaft Altstädt; Johann Friedrich Glied of Bauerschaft Altstädt and Johann Ulrich Poeppelmeier of Bauerschaft Laer.5 Friedrich Wilhelm grew up in this locale. There are no known letters or diaries which can shed some light on his early years in Germany. He was nineteen years old when he came to America with his parents in the summer of 1867.6 The Civil War had ended two years earlier. William, his parents, and his brother and sisters, traveled from their home at Ahmsen, Lippe to the port of Bremen where they booked passage on the Bark Dorette, a double-decked oak sailing vessel.7 The Dorette arrived in New Orleans on 21 Oct 1867.8 After traveling up the river, they made their way to Franklin Co., MO, where William's uncle, Barthold Poeppelmeier, and his family, lived. After arriving in Franklin Co., MO, William "went to work for his uncle, Barthold Poeppelmeier, in Detmold, who was in the wagon making business, and stayed there until he was going to get married."9 When the Assistant Marshal, F. W. Pehle, visited the farm of Barthold Poeppelmeier which was located in Lyon Township of Franklin Co., MO on 10 Aug 1870, he found William living there. It was noted on this census that William, age 22, was a wagon maker, who had personal property valued at $300.10 Emily Buchholtz nee Poeppelmeyer once wrote about her father: "William bought the farm he lived on the rest of his life next to the farm his parents bought when they arrived in the U.S.A. He bought the first 80 acres from the then Bagly nursery. I can still remember a long row of apple trees that the nursery had planted."11 His farm was located in the Buffalo Ridge community. At a trustee sale held on 2 Jan 1875, William was the highest and best bidder. He bought the Northwest quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section (8), Township (43), Range (3) West containing forty acres more or less12 On 12 Feb 1878, William enlarged his land holdings with the purchase of the Northeast quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section (8), Township (43), Range (3) West.13 When the U.S. Census was taken on 30 Jun 1880, William was staying at his parents' home in Lyon Township, Franklin Co., MO. He was 32 years old and was listed on the census as a farmer.14 Also living in this locale was the Greife family. Casper15 Heinrich Greife was originally from Bauerschaft Laer bei Herford, Westfalen, Germany. He left his home in Germany and emigrated to the German settlement in Franklin Co., MO. Here, he met his future wife, Hanna Louise Meier, who was born circa 1840 at Laer, Germany. On 12 Oct 1860, Casper Henrich Greife wed Hanna Louise Meier, age 20. They were married by Pastor Johann P. Welsch at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church of Franklin Co., MO. Hanna's parents were the witnesses.16 Casper and Hanna Louise Greife nee Meier had two daughters who married two Poeppelmeier brothers. Their daughter, Wilhelmine Greife, married William Poeppelmeier in 1880, and their daughter, Anna Greife, married Henry A. Poeppelmeier in 1882. They were married at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church of Franklin Co., MO. The marriage was witnessed by their parents.17 Hanne Wilhelmine, (1861-1932), the first child of Casper Heinrich and Hanna Louise Greife nee Meier, was born on 26 Nov 1861 at her parents' farm located near Shotwell in Franklin Co., MO.18 Shotwell was an important inland trading point located in Section (7), Township (42), Range (3) West.19 On 30 Apr 1862, Wilhelmine was baptized at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church, in Franklin Co., MO. Her sponsor was Wilhelmine Meier.20 She is better known as Wilhelmine or Minnie. Emily Buchholtz nee Poeppelmeyer once wrote about her mother, Anna Wilhelmine Greife: "Her mother passed away when mother was thirteen and then she kept house and helped raise the rest of the family until she was about nineteen years old when she was married to our father." At the time of the 1880 U.S. Census, both Wilhelmine and her sister. Anna were residing in Lyon Township, Franklin Co., MO. They were enumerated under the family of P. N. Butler, Sr., Physician and Surgeon. Wilhelmine, age 18, and Anna, age 16, were working as servants.21 Wilhelmine had eleven children between 1882 and 1904. During the years 1890-1900, William was employed as a gunsmith at Cedarfork, Franklin Co., MO. His business was valued at $500.22 On 23 Jun 1900, the enumerator for the Twelfth U.S. Census visited the farm of William Poeppelmeier located in Lyon Township of Franklin Co., MO. The enumerator found William, age 52, his wife, Minnie, age 38; and their nine children: Pauline, age 18; Mathilde, age, 16; Charles, age 13; Mollie, age 11; Amelie, age 9; Ernst, age 7; Reinhard, age 5; Olga, age 3; and Martin, age 9/12. Five of their children had attended school for at least six months during the past year. William was a farmer who owned his land free of any mortgage.23 William and Wilhelmine were long time members of Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church which is located eleven miles north of Gerald in Franklin Co., MO. They sent their children to the parochial school at Ebenezer "Stone" Church, because William wanted his children to receive a good Christian education. During the years 1900-1910, William and Wilhelmine saw their daughters, Pauline, Mathilde, and Johanna Amalie, marry and move away from home. It was during these years that Wilhelmine gave birth to Lottie in Jul of 1901 and her last child, Clifton Wilhelm in Aug of 1904. So when the enumerator for the Thirteenth U.S. Census visited the general farm of William Poeppelmeier located in Lyon Township in Apr of 1910, he found William, age 62; his wife, Minnie, age 48; and eight children: Charles, age 23; Emilie, age 19; Ernst, age 17; Reinhard, age 15; Olga, age 11; Martin, age 10; Lottie, age 7; and Willie, age 5. Their son, Charles, was listed as a farmer.24 Figure 2: The William and Wilhelmine (Greife) Poeppelmeier Family. Figure 3: The family of William and Wilhelmine (Greife) Poeppelmeier. William, age 72, stated that he was naturalized in 1873. He was the head of the household that included his wife, Minnie, age 58, and their children: Amelia, age 29; Martin, age 20; and William, age 15. Amelia was working out and both Martin and William were farm laborers.25 William's farm adjoined the farm belonging his brother, Henry. The two brothers lived side by side throughout their married lives. "William was a kind and loving father and grandfather. He was highly respected by all who knew him. William was blessed with good health all his life. For one of his age, he was always active and loved the out of door life. He worked as long as he could, being of a rather robust nature. He rarely required medical attention until the last year of his life. He was a "respected citizen, a kind and loving friend, who believed in doing all tasks well. To his neighbors he was known for his honesty and helpfulness. His children saw in him an example of good and faithful parenthood."26 On 21 Dec 1930, William and Wilhelmine Poeppelmeier celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their wedding vows in the presence of their immediate family and relatives.27 Two years later, Wilhelmine Poeppelmeier nee Greife died from a cerebral hemorrhage on 10 Aug 1932 in Franklin Co., MO at the age of 70 years, 8 months, 10 days. She was buried on 12 Aug 1932 in the new Ebenezer "Stone" Church Cemetery, Franklin Co., MO.28 After Wilhelmine's death, William was taken care of by his children, Emilie and William. His children cared for him tenderly. He was ill for about two weeks before his death from complications brought on by old age. Friedrich Wilhelm (William) Poeppelmeier died from myocarditis on 11 Apr 1936 in Franklin Co., MO at the age of 88 years, 7 months, and 21 days. He was buried on 14 Apr 1936 in the new Ebenezer "Stone" Church Cemetery, Franklin Co., MO.29 William and Wilhelmine Poeppelmeier nee Greife had the following eleven children:
1260. MATHILDE CAROLINEG4 POEPPELMEIER (GliedG7 ) (1884-1961), the second child of William and Wilhelmine Poeppelmeier nee Greife, was born on 3 Jan 1884 at her parents' farm at Buffalo Ridge (Lyon Township) near Gerald in Franklin Co., MO. She was baptized on 9 Mar 1884 at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church located in Franklin Co., MO. Her sponsors were Justine Breder and Caroline Kleinsorger.43 She received her education at the parochial school at Ebenezer "Stone." Mathilde was confirmed in 1898, on Palm Sunday, at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church. Her Bible verse was Timothy 1:15.44 At the time of the Twelfth U.S. Census, Mathilde, age 16, was living in her parents' household located in Lyon Township. She had attended school for six months during the past year.45 Mathilde and her future husband, Oscar Rohlfing, applied for their marriage license on 31 May 1905 at the county clerk's office at Union, Franklin Co., MO. On 8 Jun 1905, Mathilde Caroline Poeppelmeier wed her first husband, OSCAR ROHLFING at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church, Franklin Co., MO. Emil Rohlfing and Amalie Poeppelmeier acted as their witnesses.46 Oscar and Mathilde Rohlfing nee Poeppelmeier had no children. Mathilde Caroline Rohlfing nee Poeppelmeier wed her second husband, WILLIAM E. PEHLE. William (1873-1943), the son of Frederick W. and Hannah Pehle, was born on 8 Feb 1873.47 At the time of the Twelfth U.S. Census, William E, age 27, was living in his parents household located in Union Township, Franklin Co., MO. William was single and was the deputy collector. His father was the county revenue collector.48 Mathilde was also known as Tillie. When the Fourteenth U.S. Census was taken for Maplewood City, Central Township, St. Louis Co., MO on 13 Feb 1920, William and Mathilde Pehle were boarding with Otto and Lizzie Dicken at 7476 Flora AVE. William, age 46, was listed as a merchant of retail coal.49 Melba Schuermann writes, "Mathilde and William Pehle were living at 7429 Elm Avenue, Maplewood, St. Louis Co., MO, when August and Christine Schuermann moved to 7419 Elm Avenue in 1917. Mathilde and William then moved to a house in the 7900 block of Caroline, Maplewood, St. Louis Co., MO in the early 1920s." Melba's Aunt Myrtle's family, Malwina and Edward Dillmann, as well as Myrtle and her brother, Edward, lived several houses from Mathilde and William Pehle at 9717 Caroline. Edward said, "the Pehles were a very nice couple, quiet and kept to their selves. Their property was always well maintained." Melba Schuermann continues, "About 1930, Mathilde and William bought a small farm (10 acres) in Affton, St. Louis Co., MO off the Tesson Ferry Road. They had a big white house that was on top of a hill overlooking the meadow. There was a pond, sheep and chickens and a barn that I played in with a girl that they were considering adopting. (They did not adopt the child.) They also had a large vegetable garden. Bill came to our home in Maplewood, as well as other places, and sold eggs and vegetables. Also, I remember a huge pile of sheared and carded wool in the unfurnished living room. There was a spinning wheel. Since they lived close to the city, their friends and relatives liked to come out on Sundays. I remember the hot dogs that she usually served, cooking in the deep well cooker on her electric stove. After William's death in 1943, I heard that Tillie moved to Franklin Co. She did return occasionally for visits. The last that I heard anything about her was when Tillie visited my Mother (Christine Schuermann) when she was living on Walter Avenue in Maplewood, probably in the early 1950s.50 William and Tillie had no children. William E. Pehle died on 27 Jan 1943 and was buried in the Senate Grove Cemetery in New Haven, Franklin Co., MO.51 Mathilde Rohlfing Pehle nee Poeppelmeier died on 14 Nov 1961 and was buried in the Senate Grove Cemetery, New Haven, MO.52 Figure 4: William and Mathilde (Poeppelmeier) Pehle. Before their marriage, my mother worked as a housekeeper for a well-to-do family in St. Louis. My father worked in New Haven, Missouri for a few years with a man named George Koch who had a fuel delivery business. But he had grown up on a farm and after their marriage, he wanted to go back to the farm life. My parents bought a farm during the depression, borrowing money from several people in order to do so. Times were hard. Mother has told me of the need to sell a cow so that they could have winter clothes. When I was born in 1936, money was still scarce--I can remember scrimping so that Dad could make the payments on the loan for the farm. My parents were never able to afford improvements such as running water or central heating for the two-story house. But the arrival of electricity in the late 1940s brought lots of changes in our lives. We no longer had to cook on the wood stove when we got an electric one from my aunt when she got a new one. The farm was sold shortly after Dad died in the fall of 1961. My mother is now 91 years old and residing in a nursing home in New Haven, MO. She is not in good health at this time."213 Martin Heinrich (Henry) Poeppelmeyer died on 23 Oct 1960 at St. Francis Hospital in Washington, Franklin Co., MO at the age of 61 years, 1 month, and 18 days.
