WILHELMINE JUSTINE PÖPPELMEIER (1853- )

THE THIRD GENERATION-PÖPPELMEIER

AND

THE SIXTH GENERATION-GLIED

PART ONE

The setting for this chapter opens in 1853 at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe, which is now located in the modern day state of Nordrhein/Westfalen, Germany, with the birth of Wilhelmine JustineG3 Pöppelmeier and continues in this location until 1867. After 1867, the setting for this story shifts to Missouri, to the counties of Franklin, Lawrence and Jasper.

Wilhelmine Justine, better known as Justine, was the granddaughter of BernhardG1 Pöppelmeier, and the daughter of Hermann HeinrichG2 Pöppelmeier and his wife, Anne Catharine IlsabeinG5 Pöppelmeier nee Glied. She was also the great, great, great granddaughter of EberdtG1 Glied; the great, great granddaughter of JobstG2 Glied; the great granddaughter of Albert HenrichG3 Glied; and the granddaughter of Albert HenrichG4 Glied.

In 1853, Napoleon III was crowned the Emperor of the French, and the treaties creating the Zollverein (Customs Union) were restored.1 It was also the year that the Darmstaedter Bank, the first large bank for commerce and industry, was created.2 By 1853, Hermann Heinrich and Anne Catharine Ilsabein Poeppelmeier nee Glied had been married for six years. During the first six years of their marriage, Anne had given birth three children, two sons and one daughter. A month before their seventh wedding anniversary, Anne gave birth to her fourth child, Justine. Hermann, Anne, and their children, lived at Bauerschaft Ahmsen in Lippe, Germany, and they attended the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church in Herford, which is now located in the modern day state of Nordrhein/Westfalen, Germany.

1254.     WILHELMINE JUSTINEG3 PÖPPELMEIER (BernhardG1 ) (GliedG6 : Eberdt,G1 Jobst,G2 Albert Henrich,G3 Albert HenrichG4 ), the fourth child of the Erbpächter, Hermann HenrichG2 and Anne Catharine IlsabeinG5 Pöppelmeier nee Glied, was born on 19 Sep 1853 at her parents' home in Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe, Germany. She was baptized on 25 Sep 1853 by Pastor Bosse at the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church in Herford. Her only sponsor was A. J. Glied of Bauerschaft Altstädt.3 In the summer of 1867, Justine traveled with her parents and her five brothers and sisters to Bremen, where her father booked passage for the family on the Bark Dorette. Justine4 was about fourteen years old when she came to America. The Bark Dorette arrived in New Orleans on 21 Oct 1867. From there, the family traveled up the Mississippi River to Missouri. The family's final destination was the German settlement of Franklin Co., MO, where Justine's uncle, Johann Barthold Poeppelmeier, lived. After her parents settled in Franklin Co., MO, they became members of Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church. The following spring, Justine was confirmed at this church. She was confirmed on Palm Sunday, in 1868. Her Bible verse was Ps. 62:23.5

When Justine and her parents arrived in Franklin Co., MO, they found the family of Johann Henrich Breder living in Lyon Township. The Breder family was originally from the Herford area. It is likely that the Breder and Poeppelmeier families knew each other in Germany, as they both attended the same church in Herford. Johann Henrich Breder (1819-1903),6 and his wife, Anne Margarethe Ilsabein nee Vögeding (1824-1876),7 had three children while they lived in Germany: Hermann Heinrich (1846-1847),8 Friedrich Wilhelm (1848- ), and Hermann Heinrich (1851-1852).9 Only Johann Henrich Breder, his wife, Anne Margarethe, and their one surviving son, Friedrich, came to America in 1853,10 the same year that Justine's uncle, Johann Barthold Poeppelmeier and his family, did. Justine was born in the year that her future husband, Friedrich Wilhelm Breder, came to America, at age five. After the Breder family settled in Franklin Co., MO, Anne Margarethe Breder nee Vögeding gave birth to eight more children: Johanna Wilhelmine (1855-1942),11 Johann Heinrich (1857-1936),12 Hermann Heinrich (1859- ),13 Peter Johann Friedrich (1860- ),14 Peter Heinrich (1862- ),15 Anna Maria (1864- ),16 Friedrich August (1867- ),17 and Maria Sophia (1869- ).18 Two of Johann Henrich Breder's children married two Poeppelmeiers, who were cousins. Their second child, Friedrich Wilhelm Breder, married Justine Poeppelmeier, and their fourth child, Johanna Wilhelmine Breder, married August Ulrich Poeppelmeier. Justine Poeppelmeier is the first cousin to August Poeppelmeier. Anne Margarethe Ilsabein Breder nee Vögeding, age 52, died on 8 Mar 1876 in Franklin Co., MO and was buried on 10 Mar 1876 in the Ebenezer "Stone" Church Cemetery in Franklin Co., MO. She was survived by her husband and nine children.19 Johann Henrich Breder, age 83, died on 28 Feb 1903 in Franklin Co., MO and was buried on 3 Mar 1903 in the new Ebenezer "Stone" Church Cemetery in Franklin Co., MO.20

Friedrich Wilhelm (1848- ), the second child of the Heürling, Johann Henrich and Anne Margarethe Ilsabein Breder nee Vögeding, was born on 14 Feb 1848 at Bauerschaft Altstädt #47, Westfalen, Germany. He was baptized at the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church in Herford by Pastor Bosse on 20 Feb 1848. His sponsors were H. H. Bonerkamp of Bauerschaft Altstädt; F. W. Vögedsang of Bauerschaft Altstädt; and F. W. Korte also of Bauerschaft Altstädt.21 Friedrich Wilhelm was also known as F. W. or William Breder. He was confirmed in 1863, on the second Sunday after Easter, at the Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church in Franklin Co., MO. His memory verse was 2 Peter 3, 18.22

Justine met her future husband, Friedrich Wilhelm Breder in Franklin Co., MO. On 26 Mar 1874, Miss Wilhelmine Justine Poeppelmeier, age 20, wed FRIEDRICH WILHELM BREDER, age 26. They were married by the Rev. W. Schuenemann. Friedrich Wilhelm was a farmer at the time of their marriage.23

After their marriage, Friedrich and Justine first made their home in Franklin Co. MO. When the 1880 U.S. Census was taken, the enumerator found Friedrich, Justine, and their three small sons, Henry, William, and Gustav, living next door to William's parents in Lyon Township of Franklin Co., MO. William's brother, Hermann, was helping William out on the farm.24 On 4 Jun 1885, F. W. Breder and his wife, Justine, of Franklin Co., MO, sold a parcel of land to Hermann Breder which was described as part of the West half of Southwest quarter of Section (4), Township (43), North Range (3) West containing 40 acres more of less.25 In the fall of that same year, Justine's father, Hermann Heinrich Poeppelmeier, died.

Before Nov of 1885, Friedrich and Justine moved to Lawrence Co., MO, where they had five more children. While the family lived in Lawrence Co., MO, they attended Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Stotts City. Between 1898 and 1900, Friedrich and Justine moved to Jasper Co., MO. In 1900, Friedrich and Justine shared a home with their married son and his wife, and their eight unmarried children. Their house at 1801 Main Street in Galena Township of Jasper Co. MO, was filled with the coming and going of these twelve people. Friedrich and his married son, Friedrich William, were retail grocers. Friedrich's son, Gustav, was working as a day laborer at the time and his sons, Edward and Daniel, were salesmen.26 By 1910, Friedrich and Justine had moved back to Lawrence Co., MO, where Friedrich had a general farm in South Mt. Vernon Township, near their Gliedt cousins, Henry, William, and Fred.27

There are no records or family recollections of what happened to our Breders relatives after 1910.
